We've all heard the term thrown around but what exactly is "ecommerce"? Simply put ecommerce,
or electronic commerce, is a general term for any type of business that involves the transfer
of information across the Internet. The business models it encompasses include consumer based
retail sites, auction sites and sites that allow for the exchange of goods and services between companies.
To get started in the ecommerce business, the first thing you will need is a product or service to sell.
Then you will need a web site. You will also need some way of accepting payments for the goods
or services online. Typically this will mean setting up credit card processing (search) although there
are some other options for very small or low-volume sites.
The cost of running your ecommerce site will vary depending on a number of factors. You will have to pay for the cost of web site hosting, which can run from nothing up to several hundred dollars a month. You will also have to pay the cost for credit card processing. If you are going to accept credit cards there will be transaction fees to your bank and the credit card processing companies as well as monthly fees.
An ecommerce business can be just as risky as any other type of business. Some things you will want to consider that can contribute to your success include:
- Make sure there is a demand for your product or service. It is easy to get carried away by the idea of having an online business; you can forget that if there is no demand for your goods no one is going to buy them.
- Have a unique selling position (USP). Chances are if you have an idea someone else is out there with the same one. You will have to find a way to make your site and different from all the others.
- Design an exceptional website.
- Use a good hosting service.
- Provide exceptional service.
- Concentrate on marketing - this can make or break your ecommerce business.
