Selecting a Franchise

You have made the decision to invest in a franchise and it has come time to choose which one. Like any other investment, there are a number of factors that must be carefully considered. Some of these include:

Franchise Reputation:
One of the main reasons for purchasing a franchise is the immediate association you get with an already established name brand. However, before purchasing a particular franchise you should examine the company's reputation for quality products and services. Check whether complaints have been filed against the franchise with a Better Business Bureau or consumer protection agency. While a widely recognized name will draw customers who know the product or service you sell, you want to be sure you are joining a reputable brand.

Skills:
Investigate the background of current franchise owners. Do other franchise owners of the product you plan to invest in have technical backgrounds or special training that help them in the particular industry? Do you have a similar background or skills?

Demand:
Is the franchisor's product in demand? Is the product something that has been around for a long time and will likely remain popular or is it a passing fad?

Competition:
How many other businesses are there offering the same product or service you plan to market? Look around your neighborhood, community, and city. Does the franchisor already have a franchise operating near close by to where you plan on opening?

Training and Support Services:
Another significant reason to purchase a franchisee is the training and support you get from the franchise system. What training and ongoing support will you receive? Does the training compare or surpass the training for typical workers in the same industry?
